The 7A Strategy Framework
The 7A Strategy Framework: A Growth Plan for Corporates in Emerging Markets
For years, I was frustrated — both working for and observing corporates — as they focused only on a sliver of the economic pie, while largely ignoring the majority market: South Africa’s township economy.
Why was this happening?
What I found was surprising: the frameworks being used — like Kotler’s 4Ps — were never designed for our realities. They were built for mature, developed markets. But emerging markets operate under different constraints, cultures, and opportunities. Emerging market challenges require emerging market frameworks.
I tried to find such a framework — but couldn’t. So I decided to create one. And that’s where my journey began.
I wanted to understand why so many companies struggle to scale sustainable, inclusive, and profitable solutions in emerging markets. The insight was clear:
External opportunities — like demand, need, and local relevance — are often well understood.
Internal capabilities — such as culture, processes, and risk appetite — rarely match what’s required.

And even when both sides exist, there’s often no bridge between them. To address this, I went to India to learn from and within an emerging market — where I encountered the powerful work of Singh and Prahalad, particularly their 4A Framework: Acceptability, Affordability, Availability, and Awareness. It is my considered view, these are far more relevant to emerging market practicalities than Kotler’s 4Ps.
My research revealed the need to go further — to extend the 4As. So I added three internal enablers: Acculturation, Ambidexterity, and Alignment — creating a more complete, practical framework grounded in the realities of emerging markets.
The result: The 7A Strategy Framework — a roadmap for businesses, NGOs, and governments to unlock growth that works with the community, for the community — and most importantly, serves, empowers, and benefits the Base of the Pyramid.
The 7 A’s, in brief:
Acceptability – Does your product or service align with local values, tastes, and norms?
Affordability – Can your offer meet economic realities without sacrificing quality?
Availability – Are your solutions reliably accessible in the right places, at the right time?
Awareness – Do people know about you — and trust you?
Acculturation – Is your organization culturally intelligent and locally embedded?
Ambidexterity – Can you optimize the “now” while building the “next”?
Alignment – Are your external ambitions matched by internal capacity and leadership unity?
If you’re a corporate, NGO, regulator, or aggregator seeking to leverage your levers of impact — and truly harness the power of Ubuntu by bridging the Top and the Base of the Pyramid.
The time is now to open a new chapter of profit-enabled impact, growth that is sustainable AND profitable AND Inclusive.
