Spaza Shops
I walked yesterday a residential block in Thokoza township (ca 500x500m). I counted 18 Spaza Shops and at least 85 other businesses. That’s 100+ businesses in a tiny space. From hair salon, day care, izozo manufacturing, shishanya place, Kota eateries, pubs, Tyre shops, mattress repair, furniture manufacturing etc. The energy and sense of entrepreneurship is certainly different to what one experiences at Cedar Square Shopping Mall on a Wednesday afternoon.
My 3x hashtag#thinkdisruption moments: 1. The R900bn township economy opportunity is real and happening now not now now. 2. Township economy does NOT equal only spaza shops. 3. Aculteration, Ambidexterity and Alignment are the key ingredients for Top of the Pyramid companies to enter the township playing field. Without it. Forget it.
